The Issues of Basic Education Curriculum and Admission into Secondary Schools in Nigeria

 Abstract

Global changes call for school curriculum innovations. The country has witnessed two major curriculum reform initiatives at the basic education level. This paper examines issues of Basic Education Curriculum and Admission into secondary schools in Nigeria. The concept of Universal Basic Education (UBE) was highlighted. The revised 9-year Basic Education Curriculum (September, 2014-present) and the structure were also analyzed. The paper further examined the Senior Secondary Education Curriculum and the promotional examinations in the school system.  Products of secondary schools point to the fact that much still need to be done in implementation of the Basic Education Curriculum. Factors that will help to enhance proper standard of education at the secondary school level were discussed. Recommendations and conclusions were made.
