Abstract

The increasing rate of insecurity in Nigeria and the threat posed by the COVID-19 has led to the closure of schools. Extended school closures may not only cause loss of learning but disruption in the delivery of school curriculum which calls for concern.  This study examined the awareness of teachers, readiness and perceived challenges to the use of distance learning for curriculum delivery in secondary education in the face of insecurity. The targeted population was 5,215 secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital territory. Multi stage sampling technique was used to select 2 schools from each of the 6 Area Councils in FCT from where 10 teachers per school were selected. The total sample for the study was 120 secondary school teachers.  Instrument for data collection for the study was a structured Questionnaire titled Teachers Awareness, Readiness and Challenges to Curriculum Delivery through Distance Learning Amidst Insecurity (TARCCDDL). The instrument was face validated by experts in measurement and evaluation experts in Education Research entre of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). For reliability, Crobach Alpha method was used and a Correlation Coefficient of 0.82 was obtained. Mean, standard deviation and simple percentages computation were used to analyze the data collected for the study. The findings revealed that teachers were highly aware that using distance learning for curriculum delivery during insecurity promotes immediate feedback, promotes student’s interaction and collaboration. The findings also revealed that teachers were ready to switch to distance learning, however, they felt hindered due to lack of facilities, equipment, and capacity building to distance learning education. Based on the findings, it recommended that curriculum delivery through distance learning should be encouraged in all schools at different levels during insecurity or difficult times.
