 Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to look at university admission process in Nigeria, the challenges and prospects. The university is a degree awarding post-secondary institution of learning where students study and carry out research in various disciplines. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has the responsibility of conducting entrance examination for student seeking admission into the university. Inadequate institutions, examination mal-practice, overcrowded lecture halls, poor laboratories, exorbitant fees, inadequate lecturers, poor funding, and lack of collaborative learning among others, stand out as the challenges of admission and access to quality university education in Nigeria. The paper recommended that the Federal government of Nigeria should establish more universities while strengthening the already existing ones, increase annual budgetary allocation for education, encourage inter-institutional co-operation and linkages, establish functional scholarship boards that provide bursary allocation and students loan schemes among others.
