 ABSTRACT

The study examined the relationship between admission process and quality of university education in Nigeria. Questionnaire was the instrument used. 380 respondents took part in the study. Mean and chi-square statistics were used for data analysis. Finding revealed that admission processes in the Nigerian universities involves possession of relevant five O’ level subjects, and passing of UTME. Quality of university education can be addressed through enhancing quality of teaching/learning, as well as enhancing teachers’ researches and publications in local and international journals, the challenges are that admission by catchment and principle of quota system promotes mediocrity at the expense of merit. The recommendations proposed are that more than fifty per cent of admission should be based on merit; departments should be empowered to have more input in teachers’ recruitment, government should fund and expand the existing structures to accommodate more deserving students.
