Admission Process and Access to Quality Teacher Education in Nigeria

A b s t r a c t

The paper is of the view that the issue of quality education should be looked at holistically with necessary infrastructure put in place. The paper has carefully looked at what quality education entails. It has been discovered that it is key to promoting access to acquisition of appropriate skills needed for individual and national development. The paper attempts to show that the quality of a nation’s educational system rests solely on the quality of its teaching force. The teacher takes the pride of place in the dissemination of knowledge everywhere in the world. For teachers to cope with the myriad of numerous curricula and pedagogic problems bedevilling the education sector there must be adequate planning and preparation. Teacher training must be seen beyond mere numerical strength but also in terms of quality. In view of the fact that no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers, some parameter for admission into teacher training programme are considered. The paper posits that in this era of technology which has turned the whole world into a global village, government should as a matter of urgency embark on quality teacher preparation programmes through pre-service and in-service education that is Information Communication Technology (ICT) driven, review our current national curriculum at all levels of education with Information Communication Technology (ICT) components so as to meet the demands of the information age. This will enable government produce the new kind of teacher that is relevant and knowledge driven.
