YORÙBÁ LANGUAGE AS A VERITABLE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION FOR TEACHING MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN LEARNING INSTITUTIONS OF NIGERIA.

Abstract

The most functional and unique characteristic possessed by human beings among all living creatures is the ability to express themselves orally  distinctively and comprehensibly through the use of  Language. However, any language being spoken by an individual or a group but cannot be comprehended to carry out the content/message/ instruction therein is an ordinary noise that conveys no meaning. Consequently, this paper dwells on the functionality of Yorùbá Language as a veritable medium of instruction that can be used to impact knowledge in Mathematics, Science and Technology in our learning institutions in Nigeria. The introductory aspect would be on the definition and status of language generally in the world. I would thereafter go further to express the status of Yorùbá language in Nigeria and the world at large. After that, the paper addressed the locations of Yorùbá speakers. Moreover, the paper would dwell on the previous and present status of  Yorùbá language in the National Policy on Education. After this, the paper would speak on the concept and present status of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Nigerian learning and research institutions. Following this would be the idea of using Yorùbá Language to teach Mathematics, Science and Technology in Nigeria. Yoruba possesses enough morphological, phonological, syntactic and semantic qualities that can take care of all the terminologies and teachings of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Nigeria
