Dr. Olusegun Godwin Ogundare Dr. Freddrick Ebimobowei Mefun

AbstractThe study investigated areas of conflict which do arise from the opinion of parents, teachers and students. It also looked at some aspects of disagreement between Parents and teachers over students’ choice of areas of specialization at the beginning of senior secondary school. Eight schools were picked in Ibadan, Oyo State; 4 co-educational schools, 2 single sex (male) and 2 single sex (female). From the schools; 135 students, 135 parents and 32 Basic Science and technology teachers were selected, four teachers from each school. Three validated and reliable questionnaires were used. The instruments were administered on the teachers, parents and their children (students) and the results were collected for the purpose of analysis. Simple percentages and Chi square were used to analyse the data.  The results showed that parents were not ready to listen to the advice given by the teachers on career choice of their children.  The results also showed that the percentage of students showing keen interest to study science was still very low due to the fact that they have lost interest in mathematics at the junior secondary school level. Also, most parents don’t have time to meet with their children’s teachers and discuss issues on the academic ability and interest of the children involved. They only choose profession for children based on prestige in society. On the basis of this, it is recommended that parents should not distant themselves from school in order to always engage in active discussion with teachers of their children in their formative early years at upper Basic level. This will help to discuss why many students develop phobia for mathematics which later affected their choice of science
