ASSESSMENT OF ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS OF CHEMISTRY TEACHERS’ JOB PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OYO STATE.

 Abstract

The study assessed entrepreneurial skills profile of chemistry teachers in secondary schools in Oyo state. The study used ex-post facto design of survey research type; Simple random sampling technique was employed to select three zones out of the eight educational zones. Likewise, simple random sampling technique was used to select ten schools from each zone. In each of the selected schools, purposive random sampling technique was employed to select Chemistry teacher. The population consists of all the chemistry teachers in Oyo State. Overall, a total of (30) thirty Chemistry teachers participated in the study. One validated observation instruments was used to collect data for the study. This is Entrepreneurial Skills Questionnaire(r = 0.75). Three research questions were raised and answered. The data obtained were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression at 0.05 level of significance. The result revealed significant positive relationship between personal characteristics and Chemistry teachers’ job performance (r = .501, P < 0.05). Also, the result shows that inter-personal skills was significant on Chemistry teachers’ job performance (r = .587, p < 0.05).The adjusted R2, which estimates the variance on dependent variable measure accounted for by the combination of the components of independent variable, was 0.297. This implies that, all the components of independent variable: Entrepreneurship Skills: (personal characteristics, inter-personal skills and critical and creative thinking skill) made 30% contribution to the variance in Chemistry teachers’ job performance. Regression ANOVA produced (F (3, 26) = 5.082, P < 0.05). The paper submitted that: teachers should develop their interpersonal skills; there should be periodic seminar and workshop for teachers on how to adapt their entrepreneurship skill to teaching and learning process.
